Neck Pain and Osteopathic Management

Neck pain is a common complaint for the general population with a prevalence of around 20-30%.

There are many potential causes of neck pain, and the specific cause can vary depending on the individual. Some common causes include:

·      Musculoskeletal issues- such as poor posture, strain, or injury to the muscles, ligaments, or bones in the neck.

·      Neurological conditions- such as nerve compression or irritation.

·      Degenerative conditions- such as osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease.

·      Rheumatological conditions- such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis.

·      Psychological conditions- such as stress or depression.

·      Trauma- such as whiplash injury from a car accident.

It’s important to note that neck pain can also be a symptom of other underlying health conditions and therefore, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional if you experience chronic or severe neck pain.

Osteopaths can offer a diagnosis for your neck pain and tailor a management plan for your specific injury or can refer you off for further evaluation.

Osteopathic management of acute neck pain typically involves a combination of manual techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and manipulation, stretching, muscle energy technique, cupping and dry needling. The goal of these techniques is to reduce muscle tension, improve mobility in the neck, and alleviate pain.

Other treatments that may be used in the management of neck pain include exercises to improve strength and flexibility, and advice on posture and ergonomics. Other lifestyle factors will also be assessed by an osteopath and taken into consideration when offering a management plan.
